ԱՄՆ կոնգրեսին Շաքիլ Աֆրիդին հայտնի է որպես «հերոս բժիշկ»` «Ալ-Քայիդա»-ի հիմնադիր Ուսամա բեն Լադենի գտնվելու վայրը պարզելու հարցում ունեցած ենթադրյալ դերի համար: Սակայն հայրենի Պակիստանում բժիշկ Շաքիլ Աֆրիդին հանրությանը ներկայացվել է որպես դավաճան եւ արդեն վեցերորդ տարին է` բանտում է գտնվում, հաղորդում է «Ամերիկայի ձայն»-ը:
Ենթադրաբար, Աֆրիդին մասնակցել է ԿՀՎ-ի ձեռնարկած բեն Լադենի որոնումներին: Նա հեպատիտի դեմ պատվաստանյութի քարոզ էր իրականցնում, որի շնորհիվ ԿՀՎ-ն, հավանական է, կարողացել է ստանալ ԴՆԹ-ի նմուշներն ու համոզվել այն բանում, որ «համար մեկ ահաբեկիչը» գտնվում է Պակիստանի Աբաթոբադ քաղաքում:
2011 թվականի մայիսի 2 –ին ԱՄՆ հատուկ ծառայությունները ոչնչացրեցին «համար մեկ ահաբեկչին» եւ նրա մի քանի հանցակիցների:
Մի քանի օր անց Աֆրիդին ձերբակալվել է սահմանային անցակետում: Ակնհայտորեն, նա փորձել է փախչել Աֆղանստան: 2012 թվականի մայիսին Աֆրիդին մեղավոր է ճանաչվել պետական դավաճանության մեջ`տեղի զինված խմբավորմանն իբր թե ֆինանսական օգնություն ցուցաբերելու համար, որը գործում է Աֆղանստանի հետ սահմանակից ցեղային շրջանում: Աֆրիդին կանգնել է ցեղային դատարանի առջեւ: Նա դատապարտվել 33 տարվա կալանքի, եւ միայն ցեղային ատյանն իրավունք ունի լսել նրա բողոքարկումը: Փաստաբանին արգելված է տեսակցել Աֆրիդիի հետ: ԱՄՆ նախագահական ընտրություններում Դոնալդ Թրամփի հաղթանակը Աֆրիդիի համար նոր հույսի առիթ դարձավ: Թրամփն իր քարոզարշավի ընթացքում քննադատել էր Պակիստանի վերաբերմունքը Աֆրիդիի նկատմամբ եւ Fox News հեռուստաալիքին հայտարարել, որ «երկու րոպեում» կազատի նրան:
Բժշկի ընտանիքն աշխատում է չքննարկել այդ գործը: Նրա եղբայրը` Ջամիլ Աֆրիդին փաստաբանի միջոցով «Ամերիկայի ձայն»-ին հայտնել է, որ ընտանիքը հիասթափված է իրավական քաշքշուկներից:
