Հարվարդի համալսարանի գիտնակնները վերջերս հայտնաբերել է 615 տեսակի բակտերիաներ, որոնք բնակվում են բերանի, լեզվի և կոկորդի հատվածում: Բացի այդ, եղունգները պարունակում են բազմաթիվ բակտերիաներ, որոնց անհնար է նկատել անզեն աչքով: Բերանից զատ քիթը և աչքերը նույնպես պարունակում են բազմաթիվ վնասակար մանրէներ, որոնք հակահիգենիկ են:
