Սիրիական Իդլիբ նահանգում ենթադրյալ քիմիական հարձակման զոհերի թիվը հասել է 72-ի՝ այդ թվում 20 երեխա և 17 կին: Լոնդոնում տեղակայված Մարդու իրավունքների սիրիական դիտարանի իրավապաշտպանների տվյալներով՝ զոհերի թիվը հնարավոր է աճի, քանի որ դեռևս կան անհետ կորած անձինք:
Հարձակումը տեղի է ունեցել երեկ առավոտյան՝ զինված ընդդիմության վերահսկողության տակ գտնվող Խան Շեյխուն քաղաքում: Սիրիացի ակտիվիստները կասկածներ ունեն, որ սիրիական բանակի կամ ռուսական օդուժի կողմից հարձակման ժամանակ օգտագործվել է քիմիական զենք:
Այդ հարվածներից անմիջապես հետո մարդիկ գետնի վրա սկսել են խեղդվել: Ականատեսների վկայությամբ՝ շատերը մահացել են շնչառական խնդիրների պատճառով, տուժածների մի մասը անշարժ փռվել են գետնին, մյուսների բերաններից փրփուր է թափվել:
Ընդդիմադիր ակտիվիստները պնդում են, որ օդուժը հրթիռներ է արձակել նաև տեղի հիվանդանոցների ուղղությամբ, որտեղ օգնություն էր ցուցաբերվում տուժածներին:
Սիրիական զինուժը հայտարարում է, որ առնչություն չունի հնարավոր քիմիական հարձակման հետ, ռուսաստանցի զինվորականների պնդմամբ՝ սիրիական օդուժը հարվածներ է հասցրել ահաբեկիչների խոշոր զինապահեստների վրա, որտեղ քիմիական զենք էր պահվում: Ռուսաստանի պաշտպանության նախարարության ներկայացուցիչ Իգոր Կոնաշենկովը հայտարարել է, որ քիմիական զինամթերքը ուղարկվել է Իրաք, ինչպես նաև անցած տարեվերջին զինված ընդդիմության կողմից օգտագործվել սիրիական Հալեպում:
