Հիրոմանտները դարեր շարունակ վստահեցնում էին, որ մարդու ձեռքի ափի գծերի միջոցով կարելի է որոշել նրա ապագան, սակայն գիտնականները հերքել են այս պնդումն ու բացատրել դրանց իրական նշանակությունը:

Մարդկային օրգանիզմը շատ բարդ ու բազմաֆունկցիոնալ մեխանիզմ է, որի յուրաքանչյուր օրգանի նկարագրությունը կարող է ժամեր տևել: Գիտնականներին հետաքրքրել է, թե ինչպես են առաջացել ձեռնափի գծերն ու ինչ նշանակություն  ունեն դրանք, ուստի նրանք որոշել են մանրակրկիտ ուսումնասիրություն անցկացնել:

Ափերի գծերը, ինչպես և մատնահետքերը, յուրահատուկ են և չեն կրկնվում: Յուրաքանչյուր մարդու մոտ դրանք տարբեր են լինում: Գիտնականներին այս հարցին ավելի ծայրահեղականորեն են նայում, քան հիրոմանտները:

Գիտնականները վստահ են, որ մարդու ափերի գծերի և նրա ճակատագրի միջև ոչ մի կապ չկա: Ըստ էության` դրանք նույնիսկ գծեր չեն, այլ պարզապես մաշկի ծալքեր, որոնք ձևավորվում են պտղի ներարգանդայրն զարգացման առաջին 12 շաբաթվա ընթացքում: Դրանք նախատեսված են ափը ծալելու համար և օգնում են ավելի հարմարավետ կերպով կառավարել ձեռքերը: Սովորաբար ծնվելիս մարդու ձեռքին լինում է երեք ծալք, որոնք տարբերվում են հաստությամբ և ճյուղավորվածությամբ:

Լինում են նույնիսկ դեպքեր, երբ նորածնի ափին մեկ ծալք է լինում, սակայն նման դեպքերը հանդիպում են 3000-ից մեկի մոտ և խոսում են զարգացման ընթացքում առաջացած որևէ խանգարման կամ ախտաբանության մասին: Բժշկության մեջ այս երևույթն անվանվում է եզակի մեծացում, որը կարող է լինել Դաունի համախտանիշի և մի շարք այլ խանգարումների ախտանշան:
