Սումգայիթի ջարդերը ցեղասպանություն են՝ փաստաթղթերով և ականատեսների ցուցմունքներով ապացուցված: Փետրվարի 28-ին լրագրողների հետ հանդիպման ժամանակ այս մասին ասաց «Ընդդեմ իրավական կամայականությունների» ՀԿ գործադ իր տնօրեն Լարիսա Ալավերդյանը:

«1988 թվականը խորհրդային  ժամանակահատված էր, և իշխանությունները բոլոր, նույնիսկ փոքր, հանցագործությունները ոչ միայն կարող էին բացահայտել, այլ նաև պատժել: Այդ պատճառով չէինք պատկերացնում, որ սումգայիթյան գործողությունները սկիզբ էին դնում մի ամբողջական գործընթացի, որը կոչվելու էր ցեղասպանություն»,- նշեց  Ալավերդյանը:

Ըստ նրա՝ Խորհրդային Միության ժամանակ այդ ջարդերը կոչվել են «զանգվածային խուլիգանական գործողություններ», սակայն իրականում դրանք ցեղասպանություն էին:
«Սումգայիթը եղել է նախազգուշացում ամբողջ հայության համար: Մինչ օրս ես և նրանք, ովքեր տեղյակ են, թե իրականում ինչ գործողություններ են տեղի ունեցել ու ինչ միջոցներ են կիրառվել այդ ժամանակ, այդ մասին տեղյակ չենք պահում լայն հանրությանը, դա խիստ կոնֆիդենցիալ ինֆորմացիա է համարվում»,-ասաց Ալավերդյանը:

Նախկին օմբուդսմենի խոսքով՝ Սումգայիթի հայերը անձնական որակների համար չեն սպանվել, այլ հայ լինելու համար:

«Ապրիլյան քառօրյա պատերազմի ժամանակ ադրբեջանական կողմի բարբարոսությունը նորություն չէր: Երբ հայ զինվորների գլուխները կտրում էին, դրանք աննախադեպ դեպքեր չէին, դրանք եղել են 1988 թվականին Սումգայիթում: Այդ մասին նկարագրված է ականատեսների ցուցմունքներում»,- ընդգծեց Ալավերդյանը:

Սումգայիթի ջարդեր. խորհրդային Ադրբեջանի Սումգայիթ քաղաքում ադրբեջանական իշխանությունների կողմից պետական մակարդակով կազմակերպված քաղաքի հայ ազգաբնակչության եղեռն և զանգվածային տեղահանություն, որը տեղի է ունեցել 1988 թվականի փետրվարի 27-29-ն ընկած ժամանակահատվածում։

Փետրվարի 29-ին խորհրդային  զորքեր են  մտցվել  Սումգայիթ, սակայն  այդ  օրը  ևս  շարունակվել են բռնարարքներն ու սպանությունները։ Բանակը զենք կիրառելու հրաման չի ստացել և չի օգնել հայերին։ Միայն երեկոյան դիմել է վճռական գործողությունների և կանխել հետագա ջարդերը։ 

Չնայած միջազգային հանրությունը դեռևս Սումգայիթի ոճրագործությունը չի ճանաչել որպես ցեղասպանություն, բայց այն դատապարտել են Եվրոխորհրդարանը (1988 թ.), ԱՄՆ սենատը (1989 թ.) և Արգենտինայի խորհրդարանը։
