Նախորդ տարվա նոյեմբերին՝ ԱՄՆ նախագահի ընտրություններում Դոնալդ Թրամփի հաղթանակից ընդամենը մի քանի օր անց, Մոլդովայի նախագահ ընտրված Իգոր Դոդոնը, որը հայտնի է իր ռուսամետ հայացքներով, սկսել է քայլեր ձեռնարկել երկրի արտաքին քաղաքական կողմնորոշումը արմատապես փոխելու ուղղությամբ:

Իր առաջին պաշտոնական այցը նա կատարել է Մոսկվա, որտեղ հանդիպել է ՌԴ նախագահ Վլադիմիր Պուտինի հետ՝ հայտարարելով, թե հույս ունի, որ Մոլդովայի հաջորդ խորհրդարանական ընտրություններից հետո հնարավոր կլինի չեղարկել Եվրամիության հետ ստորագրված Ասոցացման համաձայնագիրը: Նա նաև նշել է, թե իր երկրիրը ծրագրում է համագործակցել Եվրասիական տնտեսական միության (ԵՏՄ) հետ և ստանալ դիտորդի կարգավիճակ այդ կազմակերպությունում: Թեև Մոլդովան, իհարկե, խորհրդարանական պետություն է, և առանց խորհրդարանական մեծամասնության հաստատման՝ նշված փոփոխությունները հնարավոր չի լինի իրականացնել, այնուամենայնիվ այս իրադարձությունը, առնվազն, ենթակա է որոշ քննարկման և վերլուծության՝ կապված ԵՄ Արևելյան գործընկերության երկրներում եվրոպական ինտեգրման, Թրամփի ընտրությունից հետո Ռուսաստան-Միացյալ Նահանգներ կամ Ռուսաստան-Արևմուտք հարաբերությունների հնարավոր փոփոխության և տարածաշրջանում ռուսական ազդեցության ամրապնդման հետ: Իսկ նմանատիպ հեռանկարը ուղղակիորեն և անուղղակիորեն կապված է Հայաստանի արտաքին քաղաքականության և անվտանգության հետ: Հիշենք, որ Հայաստանը Արևելյան գործընկերության անդամ պետություն է, հռչակել է եվրոպական ինտեգրման քաղաքականություն, բայց մյուս կողմից՝ անդամակցում է ԵՏՄ-ին, և նաև չմոռանանք, որ ոչ անցյալում Երևանը բացահայտորեն կանգնած էր ԵՄ Ասոցացման համաձայնագիրը ստորագրելու կամ եվրասիական ինտեգրման գործընթացին միանալու բարդ երկընտրանքի առջև: Իրավիճակը հանգուցալուծվեց 2013 թ. սեպտեմբերի 3-ին՝ Մոսկվայում ՌԴ նախագահի հետ հանդիպումից հետո ՀՀ նախագահ Սերժ Սարգսյանի հայտարարությամբ՝ Մաքսային միությանը անդամակցելու և եվրասիական ինտեգրացիոն գործընթացներին մասնակից դառնալու Երևանի որոշման մասին:
