Անցյալ տարվա մարտ ամսին 55ամյա Կրեյգ Լյուիսը մահանում էր սրտային անբավարարությունից, որն առաջացել էր նրա մարմնի հյուսվածքներում գտնվող սպեցիֆիկ սպիտակուցների հետևանքով, և անգամ կարդիոխթանիչի տեղադրումը չէր կարող փրկել նրա կյանքը: Բայց Տեխասցի երկու բժիշկներ գտան այդ պրոբլեմի հեղաշրջումային լուծումը, որը կայանում էր մի սարքի տեղադրման մեջ, որը թույլ է տալիս, որ արյունը շրջանառություն կատարի ամբողջ օրգանիզմում՝ անգամ պուլսի բացակայության դեպքում:
Բժիշկներ՝ Բիլլի Կոնը և Բադ Ֆրեյզերը վիրահատեցին և հանեցին Կրեյգի սիրտը և այնտեղ տեղադրեցին տվյալ ապարատը: Վիրահատությունից արդեն մեկ օր անց հիվանդը գիտակցության է եկել և հաղորդել իր փրկիչներին, որ իրեն հրաշալի է զգում: Բժիշկները ասացին, որ մինչ այդ ապարատը մարդու օրգանիզմում տեղադրելը, նրանք կատարել են 50 հաջող փորձեր կենդանիների վրա:
Միստր Լյուիսի ամիլոիդոզը այնքան արագ էր ընթանում, որ նրան բուժող բժիշկը ասում էր, որ եթե հրաշք չլինի, ապա նա կմահանա 12 ժամից: Հետևաբար կնոջ համաձայնությամբ կատարեցին ապարատի տեղադրումը, որը կազմված էր այնպիսի մասերից, որոնց մեծամասնությունը պատրաստված էր տնային պայմաններում: Սարքը աշխատում է անդադար՝ մատակարարելով արյուն: Նրա կինը ասում է, որ դրել է ականջը նրա կրծքավանդակին և լսել խշշոց: Նա ասում է, որ ամուսինը ճիշտ այնպիսին է, ինչպիսին առաջ, միայն հիմա նա պուլս չունի:
