Հերովդես թագավորի օրերին էր, որ Հիսուս ծնվեց Հրեաստանի Բեթղեհեմ քաղաքում: Եվ ահա արևելքից մոգեր եկան Երուսաղեմ և հարցրին.
-Ո՞ւր է հրեաների նորածին թագավորը. մենք տեսանք նրա աստղը արևելքում և եկանք երկրպագելու նրան:
Երբ Հերովդես թագավորը լսեց այս, խռովվեց, և նրա հետ՝ Երուսաղեմի բոլոր բնակիչները: Կանչեց ժողովրդի բոլոր ավագ քահանաներին ու Օրենքի ուսուցիչներին և հարցրեց նրանց, թե որտե՞ղ պիտի ծնվի Քրիստոսը: Նրանք պատասխանեցին.
-Հրեաստանի Բեթղեհեմ քաղաքում, որովհետև Միքիա մարգարեն այսպես է գրել. «Դու, Բեթղեհե՛մ, Հուդայի՛ քաղաք, հռչակով նվազ չես Հուդայի մյուս քաղաքներից, որովհետև քեզնից պիտի ելնի մի իշխան, որ պիտի հովվի իմ ժողովրդին՝ Իսրայելին»:
Այն ժամանակ Հերովդեսը գաղտնաբար իր մոտ կանչեց մոգերին և նրանց ստուգեց աստղի երևալու ժամանակը: Ապա նրանց ուղարկեց Բեթղեհեմ՝ պատվիրելով.
-Գնացե՛ք, ստույգ տեղեկություններ քաղելով գտե՛ք երեխային, և երբ գտնեք, տեղեկացրե՛ք ինձ, որպեսզի ես էլ գամ և երկրպագեմ նրան:
Թագավորի այս հրահանգը լսելուց հետո մոգերը մեկնեցին: Նրանք չափազանց ուրախացան, երբ կրկին տեսան այն աստղը, որ տեսել էին արևելքում: Եվ ահա աստղը առաջնորդեց նրանց, մինչև որ եկավ ու կանգ առավ այն տեղի վրա, որտեղ գտնվում էր երեխան: Երբ տուն մտան, տեսան երեխային իր մոր՝ Մարիամի հետ, և մինչև գետին խոնարհվելով՝ երկրպագեցին մանկանը: Ապա բաց արեցին իրենց արկղիկները և Հիսուսին ընծայեցին իրենց նվերները՝ ոսկի, կնդրուկ և զմուռս:
Հետո այլ ճանապարհով գնացին իրենց երկիրը, առանց Հերովդեսին հանդիպելու, ինչպես որ Աստված երազի մեջ հրահանգել էր նրանց:
