Պատմության մեջ ամենաուժգին երկրաշարժը տեղի է ունեցել Չիլիում

Չիլիի երկրաշարժի ժամանակ ավերվել են 2,5 հազար շինություններ, և քաղաքային ենթակառուցվածքի մասնակի կործանում է տեղի ունեցել: Դրա մագնիտուդը կազմել է 9.3-9.5 բալ:
Այդ երկրաշարժը Վալդիվիա քաղաքում էր, 1960 թ. մայիսի 22-ին: Քաղաքը գրեթե ամբողջությամբ ոչնչացվել էր: Երկրաշարժին անվանում են նաև «չիլիական մեծ երկրաշարժ»: Բացի 6 հազար զոհերից՝ ևս 2 մլն մարդու արյուն է թափվել այդ օրերին:
Երկրաշարժի զոհ են դարձել 6 հազար մարդիկ, այդ թվում՝ սրտի կաթված ստացած մեկը: Տարհանվել է ավելի քան 900 հազար մարդ: Հաջորդող հինգշաբթի օրը Չիլիի առափնյա հատվածում ևս մեկ երկրաշարժ տեղի ունեցավ՝ այս անգամ 7,8 մագնիտուդով: Այնուհետև ևս 20 կրկնվող ստորգետնյա ցնցումներ են գրանցվել:
Չիլիի երկրաշարժը համարվում է պատմության մեջ հզորագույններից մեկը:
Ի դեպ՝ մարդկանց մեծամասնությունը տուժել է ցունամիից, որի ալիքները հասել էին 10 մետրի: Ցունամին հսկայական կորուստներ է պատճառել Հավայան կղզիներում գտնվող Հիլո քաղաքին, որը 10 հազար կմ հեռավորության վրա էր գտնվում էպիկենտրոնից: Ցունամիի ալիքները հասել են անգամ մինչև Ճապոնիա և Ֆիլիպիններ:
Երկրաշարժի հետևանքով երկրի կրած վնասը մոտավոր հաշվարկներով կազմել է 1.5 միլիարդ դոլար:
