Ավստրալիայի խորհրդարանում Հայաստանի հետ բարեկամության խումբ է ձևավորվել: Այս մասին Ավստրալիայի օրենսդիր մարմնի նիստում հայտարարել է Հյուսիսային Սիդնեյից ընտրված լիբերալ պատգամավոր Թրենթ Ցիմերմանը:
«Շուրջ 50000 ավստրալացիներ ունեն հայկական արմատներ: Արդեն երկար ժամանակ է, ինչ հայերը ավստրալական հասարակության մաս են կազմում: Նրանցից առաջինները եկել են դեպի մեր երկրի ափերը դեռևս 1850-ականների «ոսկե տենդի» ժամանակաշրջանում, սակայն ավելի շատ հայեր եկան Հայոց ցեղասպանության ողբերգությունից հետո: Բազմաթիվ հայեր եկան նաև 1950-70-ական թվականներին»,- ներկայացրել է Ցիմերմանը:
Նրա խոսքով` հայերն Ավստրալիայում դարձել են օրինակելի քաղաքացիներ` առաջատար դերեր խաղալով բիզնեսում, մշակույթում և քաղաքականության մեջ: «Մեր հարաբերությունները ժամանակակից Հայաստանի հետ, որն այս տարի տոնեց իր անկախության 25-ամյակը, շատ կարևոր են: Ուրախ եմ, որ այդ փաստն արձանագրվեց խորհրդարանական բարեկամության խմբի ստեղծմամբ, ինչպես նաև ուրախ եմ դրա առաջին նախագահ լինելու համար»,- ասել է Ցիմերմանը` շնորհակալություն հայտնելով բոլոր այն պատգամավորներին, ովքեր ջանքեր են գործադրել խմբի ստեղծման ուղղությամբ, ինչպես նաև Ավստրալիայի հ այ դատի հանձնախմբին:
Ավստրալացի պատգամավորը նաև նշել է, որ ժամանակակից Հայաստանն աշխատում է ժողովրդավարացման և տնտեսական զարգացման ուղղությամբ, ինչի հարցում կարող է օգտակար լինել նաև ավստրալական փորձը: «Նույն կերպ մենք ևս կարող ենք հարստանալ մի երկրի հետ շփումից, որի ծագումը հասնում է անտիկ ժամանակներին: Հուսով եմ, որ բարեկամության խմբի ստեղծումը կարող է դառնալ այս նպատակներին հասնելու համար շարժիչ ուժը»,- եզրափակել է ավստրալացի խորհրդարանականը:
