Այսօր Հայաստանի ազգային հերոս Մոնթե Մելքոնյանի ծննդյան օրն է: Մոնթե Մելքոնյանը ծնվել է 1957 թվականի նոյեմբերի 25-ին ԱՄՆ-ում, եղեռնի ճիրաններից փրկված և Կալիֆորնիայի Վայսելիա քաղաքում հանգրվանած հայի ընտանիքում: Իր ողջ գիտակից կյանքում նա պայքարեց հայերի իրավունքների, հայոց ցեղասպանության ճանաչման և մեր հայրենիքի վերատիրման համար, թեև հնագիտության պրոֆեսոր էր և տիրապետում էր 8 լեզուների: 1980 թվականից անդամագրվելով Հայաստանի Ազատագրության Հայ Գաղտնի Բանակին՝ կարճ ժամանակում դարձավ նրա ղեկավարներից մեկը:
1981 թվականին նրա մասնակցությամբ կազմակերպվել է հայտնի «Վան» գործողությունը, որը Հ.Ա.Հ.Գ.Բ.-ին հասցրեց իր պատմության գագաթնակետին:
1981-ի նոյեմբերի 11-ին Ֆրանսիայի Օրլի օդանավակայանում Մոնթեն ձերբակալվեց կեղծ անձնագիր և ատրճանակ կրելու մեղադրանքով: Նա սկզբում դատապարտվեց 4 ամսվա ազատազրկման, իսկ ավելի ուշ դատարանը որոշեց վտարել նրան Ֆրանսիայից: Դատարանում Մոնթեն հայտարարեց. «Բոլոր հայերը կեղծ անձնագրեր են կրում՝ ֆրանսիական, ամերիկյան, դրանք կեղծ կլինեն այնքան ժամանակ, քանի դեռ դրանք հայկական չեն…» :
1985-ին նա նորից կեղծ անձնագրով մտավ Ֆրանսիա և մի քանի ամիս անց նորից ձերբակալվեց «ահաբեկչություն» կազմակերպելու մեղադրանքով:
Մոնթեն բանտից դուրս է եկել 1989 թվականի հունվարի 16-ին և մի քանի տարի տարբեր երկրներում դեգերելուց հետո՝ ժամանել Հայաստան, որտեղ արդեն սկսվել էր Արցախյան ազատագրական պայքարը: Այստեղ նա ընդունել է Ավո կեղծանունը և 1991 թվականի սեպտեմբերին մեկնել Արցախ:
1992 թվականին Վազգեն Սարգսյանի առաջարկով ստանձնել է Մարտունու շրջանի շտաբի պետի պարտականությունը: Այստեղ կարճ ժամանակում նա շահել է բնակչության սերն ու հարգանքը իր անկեղծությամբ ու մաքրությամբ: Նրա ղեկավարությամբ Մարտունին դարձավ ամենապաշտպանված ու ամենամարտունակ շրջանը:
1993-ի մարտ-ապրիլ ամիսներին նրա ղեկավարությամբ ազատագրվել է նաև Քարվաճառը:
1993-ի հունիսի 12-ին Մոնթեն և իր ընկերները Մարզիլի գյուղի մոտ հանդիպում են զրահամեքենայի: Կարծելով հայեր են՝ մոտենում են, պարզվում է՝ ազերիներ են: Սկսվում է փոխհրաձգություն, որի արդյունքում սպանվում են Մոնթեն և ընկերը՝ Սարիբեկը:
