Ուսումնասիրության արդյունքում պարզ դարձավ, որ ալկոհոլի օգտագործումը կարող է հանգեցնել վեց տեսակի քաղցկեղի, այդ թվում կոկորդի, կերակրափողի, լյարդի, հաստ աղիքի, կանացի կրծքի և հետանցքի:
Վարկած կա, որ քաղցկեղ կարող է առաջանալ միայն հարբեցողության արդյունքում, սակայն ուսումնասիրությունը ցույց է տվել, որ նույնիսկ չափավոր խմելու դեպքում քաղցկեղ առաջանալու ռիսկը կարող է մեծանալ:

Բացի վերը նշվաց ազդցությունից, ալկոհոլն ունի նաև մի շարք այլ վնասակար հատկություններ: Այն վնասակար է ուղեղի համար: Էթանոլը՝ ալկոհոլային խմիչքների մեծ մասում առկա զանգվածը, նյութ է, որը կարող է վնասել կամ քայքայել նյարդային ողջ համակարգը։ Հարբածությունը թունավորման ձև է։ Մեծ քանակությամբ ալկոհոլը կարող է մարդուն գցել կոմայի մեջ և անգամ հանգեցնել մահվան։
Ալկոհոլի չարաշահման ամենացավալի հետևանքներից մեկը չծնված երեխայի վրա նրա թողած ազդեցությունն է։ Զարգացող պտղի համար ալկոհոլը շատ ավելի վնասակար է, քան դեղանյութերի չարաշահումը:
